Outdoor Research was founded in 1981 by an American nuclear researcher named Ron Gregg. Ron started this company after an incident on a glacier on Denali. Him and his partner were almost at the top of the glacier when their gaiter failed them. The failure of his equipment forced him to descend back down the glacier. After this incident, Ron decided to work towards better gear to prevent a situation like this from happening again. He created the X-gaiter that same year. The next year, Outdoor Research was founded!
Since then, the company has made amazing progress in their outdoor gear. Many of them being Award winning gear, such as the Swift Cap, the Helium rain jacket, and more!
Outdoor Research is an American company and all of their products are made in the USA. They now have two factories, the first Factory has been in Seattle, WA since 1981. They have now expended to a second factory in El Monte, CA. They wanted to keep all of their manufacturing in the USA to create not only ethically made products but also jobs for American citizens. During the COVID 19 pandemic, Outdoor Research started to manufacture face masks and PPE for medical staff, the armed forces, as well as the general public!
Outdoor Research is always working towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly way of manufacturing their products. 100% of their energy comes from renewable energy sources in North America. All of their down comes from Responsible Down Standards (RDS) ever since 2016. To maintain transparency about where their Down comes from, they have applied a "track your down" system on every single one of their down filled products. Outdoor Research is also working towards having 100% of their products made with recycle materials.
